Chapter Thirteen
Zakiyyah watched from the window of the store as Jasim struggled to strap the baby carrier on to his back. She chuckled, putting her hand over her mouth while he threw the bag over his shoulder and approached the entrance of the market.
“As salaamu alaikum,” he was out of breath.
“Wa alaikum as salaam,” Zak tried to suppress her laughter.
“I’m sorry.” He shook his head. “I was going to send my assistant but he…” Jasim started to explain. “We could reschedule if you like.”
“No, no. You’re here now.” She shook her head as she called her uncle. “How old is she?” She asked.
“A month.” Jasim answered.
Jasim gently rocked her while she purred under the blanket.
“It’s rather hot out, don’t you think?” She looked from the baby to him.
“Well, I read that she could get sick.” He told Zak who could no longer contain herself.
She stepped from behind the counter and pulled the blanket off of the baby. She was wearing a hat and a long sleeved sleeper. Zak shook her head as she pulled her from the carrier.
“All these clothes, in this heat is what’s going to make her sick.” She undressed the baby. “Wait here for my uncle. We will be back.” She held the baby close to her chest and left the market.
She searched the racks of baby clothes in the clothing store, next door, but there was nothing to fit the newborn.
“I guess we have to make you something, then.” She smiled at baby Tallahassee, carrying her into the sewing room.
She found a few patterns of cloth and started to sew. Every few minutes the baby would coo and Zak would rock her gently. Tallahassee’s small handcuffed the edge of Zak’s khimar while she sucked on her thumb. Zak looked down at the baby who looked just like her father and smiled. She could feel her little heart beat and wondered what it would feel like to wake up to her beautiful face every day. She thought about Jasim and took a deep breath.
“It’s now or never.” She held up a finished onesie for the baby.
By the time she returned to the market, they were done with the meeting. Uncle Talim and Jasim were talking near the front door. She walked in, still holding the baby tight. His eyes casted upon the two of them and his heart nearly skipped a beat.
“Jasim,” Zakiyyah swallowed hard. “Ask my Uncle about the contract.” She said.
“We talked about it,” he reached for Tallahassee. “You are set for the next three months.”
“No,” she stopped him, forcing him to look her in the eye. “Ask him about the contract.”
Uncle Talim stepped toward them with a smile. He put his hand on Jasim’s shoulder. “My brother, she is ready to be your wife.” He said.
“My wife?” He looked at Tallahassee and then at Zak. “You want to be my wife?”
“Yes, if you ask me.” She told him.
“Alhumdulillah.” He thought about it as the words rolled from his tongue. “Alhumdulillah.” Jasim smiled, wishing he could kiss her.
